Outreach

Outreach by tabling, solicitation, etc.

Outreach Forum

Noize will be conducting street solicitation this coming weekend (Oct 17-18). Any other collectives want to join in?

This is an ad hoc group set up to help us coordinate efforts at outreach by tabling at local festivals and events, etc. Outreach is critical to our survival. Please help by joining this group.
This page is doing double duty for both tabling, solicitation, and our rather stalled outreach campaign.

Solicitation

We do have the required insurance and solicitation permit (good through the end of 2009) to do non-street solicitation.

Street Solicitation

To do solicitation in the streets, we must give advance notice to the city Department of Inspections, Permits and Licenses (IPL) so they can put us on their calendar and follow a set of Rules for Street Solicitation

Solicitors in the streets must be over 18 (with an ID to prove it), wear a tag identifying us, and wear a safety vest. We also will need a sign and safety cones. (See the regs for important details.)

Tabling

We don't have an organized tabling operation. Perhaps we can form one here. Log in post to our Tabling Forum. Join the group to be able to post to the group calendar and post group bulletins.

Post any possible tabling event to our group calendar (at right) along with the current tabling status for that event.

DIY Tabling

In the meantime, you are empowered to table on your own initiative.

Suggestions:

  • Reserve a spot or be sure you're welcome at the event
  • If you can't set up a BH table, consider bumming some space on someone else's table where you can place some of our literature.
  • If we can't find table space, consider handing out literature on foot.

Checklist:

  • Table,
  • chairs,
  • literature (see tri-fold below)
  • 'Statement of Support' forms (see below),
  • notepad and pens,
  • paperweights (if outside),
  • maybe a banner (which we don't have yet)
  • maybe some display material (which we don't have yet)

Outreach

We are trying to gather 500 names (with contact info) on our "Statement of Support". And we're aiming to get 100 people to become sustaining members by the end of November!! [This was November, 2008!]

The main discussion has been of an anticipated door-to-door drive in the Old Louisville area. No one is in charge so the plans are only slowly coming together, but here's how it looks so far:

Volunteers should print out some flyers, brochures, and statements of support (which are available below) and go door-to-door with a script:

  • introducing yourself
  • explaining that we need support
  • asking first for sustaining membership
  • if declined, then asking for one-time donations
  • asking all to sign the statement of support

The data from the statements of support should be promptly entered online here.

The one thing missing from this plan is having a way to coordinate the areas we have covered so we don't keep repeating the same block, etc. (Maybe just post to this group's forum?)

We do have some pages copied from the Polk City Directory so maybe someone could devise a way to break the data down into blocks or other units.

DIY Tri-fold printing

Brickhouse tri-fold brochures:

  • General brochure:

We generally use Open Office so can't guarantee your results using MS Office. Download your (free) Open Office software at OpenOffice.org

    Some printing hints:

    • Be sure to print in color.
    • Use 24 lb. paper if possible.
    • It looks really good on ivory colored paper.
    • If you are printing multiple copies, print the inside page (page 2) first, let the sheets dry a few minutes, and then print the outside page (page 1). [The outside page carries more ink and can stick the sheets together.]
    • On some printers you may be able to get good results by printing the inside page in draft mode (since it has no graphics) but the outside page will look better in a regular mode.

  • An older brochure more oriented to Old Louisville. (This is very outdated. Please don't use without extensive revising):

Statement of Support

This is a form for gathering names and contact information from supporters. Use it at tabling and for door-to-door and other direct solicitation.

Enter the data from the completed forms here.

It is designed to be printed in color. Print in high enough quality that the labels for the individual fields (in light colors) show up adequately.

We have most of the resources we need on the tabling page, but they need to be organized a little better. It would probably make sense to create a new page specifically for this project. The main thing that is lacking is a method of assigning and track... [more]

Direct Democracy has something to offer BRYCC House Membership as substantive policy

Provided is a closer look at more contemporary Marxist Ideas... Larry Marx from The American Prospect that is.... The views of the author of this article are worth considering and even though some of the specific solutions offered are not that which I would agree to, the fact remains that this sort of Substantive Democratic Value

"Over the last several years, the race for money and influence and power has left the hopes and concerns of most Americans in the dust. All you see from Washington is another scandal or petty argument. And so we get discouraged. Half of us don't vote. The half of us who do vote are voting against somebody instead of voting for something. We know what fills the void: the lobbyists, the influence peddlers with the cash and connections. … They write the checks, and you get stuck with the bills."
